Because it is for humans and most other living things, detecting the amount of light in an environment is a common starting point when learning with microcontrollers and sensors. Should we increase the brightness of our display or dim it to save power? In which direction should your robot move to stay in an area with the most light? Is it day or night? You can answer all of these questions with the help of the BH1750. It is a small, powerful and cost-effective light sensor that you can add to your next project to add detection and measurement of light. The BH1750 provides 16-bit light measurements in lux, the SI unit for measuring light, making it easy to compare with other values such as references and measurements from other sensors. The BH1750 can measure from 0 to 65K+ lux, but with some calibration and advanced measurement time adjustment, it can even convincingly measure up to 100,000 lux! Sensors often come in small packages and the BH1750 is no different. Not much larger than a grain of rice, this handy light-sensory friend needs some help to be used by people experimenting and without the desire or tools to work with surfaces. Packaged on a circuit board in a STEMMA QT form factor, the BH1750 is equipped with a voltage regulator and level switching circuitry for use with 3.3V devices, such as a Feather M4 or Raspberry Pi, or 5V devices, such as an Arduino . Instead of working with the small contacts on the sensor, the circuit board breaks down all the pins to a standard 2.54mm pitch header. And hey, it does exactly what it says on the tin. This real-time clock (RTC) is the most precise you can get in a small, low-power package. We've had a breakout board version of this RTC for a while had, but we want to make it even easier for people, so it now comes with STEMMA QT connectors for plug and play simplicity. Most RTCs use an external 32 kHz timing crystal that is used to set the time with low Maintain current draw. And that's all well and good, but these crystals have a slight drift, especially when the temperature changes (the temperature changes the oscillation frequency very very very slightly, but it adds up.) This RTC is in a powerful package because the crystal is in the chip. And right next to the integrated crystal there is a temperature sensor. This sensor compensates for frequency changes by adding or removing clock ticks so that timekeeping stays on schedule. This is the best RTC you can get, and now we have it in a compact, breadboard-friendly breakout. With a button cell plugged into the back, you can get years of precise timekeeping even if the main power is lost. Ideal for data logging and clocks or anything where you really need to know the time. A coin cell is required to use the battery backup features. We do not include standard size to make shipping easier for those abroad. To make life easier so you can focus on your important work, we took the sensor and mounted it on a breakout PCB along with support circuitry so you can run it on 3.3V (Feather\/Raspberry Pi) or 5 V (Arduino\/Metro328) logic levels can be used. In addition, you can easily connect it with two wires (plus power and ground). We've even included SparkFun Qwiic compatible STEMMA QT connectors for the I2C bus, so you don't even have to solder. The MCP4728 is the answer to your wishes! Within its small package, the MCP4728 features four 12-bit DACs for all voltage settings. Additionally, it has the ability to save the settings for the DACs on an internal EEPROM. Once stored in internal non-volatile memory, the settings are loaded by default when the DAC is turned on. I2C! To take things even further, the MCP4728 allows you to choose between two sources for your reference voltage: the input voltage you use to power it to the VCC pin, or an internal 2.048V reference voltage. When using the internal reference voltage (Vref in DAC Speak), you can choose between 1x or 2x gain for the output, so your voltages range from 0V to 2.048 or 0V to 4.096V as your application requires. By default you use the input voltage as Vref, so you can scale the voltages from 0V - 3.3V or 5V depending on the input voltage. Or use the 2.048V Vref for ~3.3V usage, and the 4.096Vref for ~5V usage. The breakout for the MCP4728 is equipped with the necessary support circuitry to use with your microcontroller of choice or a Blinka supported computer.
