Locate the fuel pump in the fuel tank Step 2. Turn the key to the run position and listen if any buzzing coming from the fuel pump. If no sound, proceed to Step 5 Step 3. Set the amperage on voltage meter and place the clamp on the positive wire to the pump Step 4. Start the vehicle and record the amperage reading. Then compare the reading to manufacturer’s specifications Step 5. If the pump did not turn on at all, remove the electrical connector on the pump Step 6. Set DC volts on the meter, place the positive meter lead on the terminal of the positive wire in the connector and the negative meter lead on the terminal of the negative wire Step 7. How to Replace the Electric Fuel Pump? Step 1. Turn the engine off and locate the fuel pump fuse, then pull the fuse out and restart engine to relieve the engine’s pressure. Disconnect the negative battery terminal after the engine dies. Step 2. There are two kinds of electric fuel pumps. The first type is placed inside the gas tank while the other is placed beneath the car. A. If your pump is under the car, jack up car and support it with jack stands. Sliding under the car and follow the fuel lines toward the fuel tank. Once the pump is located, unbolt it and then let it drop slowly. B. If your pump is inside the fuel tank, it is usually under the carpet or beneath the back seat. Pop it open to unbolt the pump. Step 3. Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel pump, make sure you have someone else ready to block them so gas doesn't leak out. Step 4. Install the new pump.
